I help out with my church middle school youth group, and tonight the topic was about trusting God like Mary had to when Gabriel told her she was going to have a baby. Here are some of my favorite bits from the conversation tonight. The kids' quotes are in italics.
"Mary was HOW OLD???"
"Why did they get married so young?"
"Well, people didn't live as long then. They might only live to be 30 or 40 years old so they started having kids at an earlier age."
"But she had a baby when she was 12 or 13?!?" (One kid in particular could not get over this.)
"But wasn't Noah like 300 years old? Why did that change and people don't live that long anymore?"
"So did Joseph adopt Jesus?"
"Joseph was his stepdad!"
"So if the Holy Spirit got Mary pregnant, how did it get in her?"
The same kid, answering her own question a minute later: "Maybe God made her that way when she was a baby, so that when she turned 13 she would become pregnant."
"It's important to notice here that Jesus came from the line of David."
"So was David his grandfather?"
"Was Jacob David's dad?"
"Wait, does Jesus have any blood relatives alive today?"
"Isn't that what the Da Vinci Code is about?"
"No, not exactly. It says that Jesus married Mary Magdalene and they had kids."
"Mary Magdalene was a prostitute!"
"What's a prostitute?"
And that's where I'll end!
