The first days

Eleanor is having her hearing test done, so I have a few minutes.

Tonight we had our "celebration meal" that the hospital provides. It was so nice with rolls, salad, dinner, and dessert. For dinner I had the Surf N Turf (lobster and a tiny piece of filet mignon) and Hunter had New York Sirloin. Dinner also came with a bottle of sparkling apple juice and plastic flutes...very nice for a hospital. Eleanor got hungry in the middle of the meal, but we didn't mind.

Feeding has been a little bit of an issue. I'm nursing and it's just been pretty painful. A lactation consultant has been working with me and I think things are getting better, but it's been frustrating at times. Apparently I have a great supply though, but we've had latching problems and I'm just not sure if she's getting enough. The nurse told us something different than what we had heard about how many wet diapers she should have, and now Hunter is stressed out. I found a couple of sites online supporting what we thought (2 or 3 wet diapers on day 2 is great....the nurse said she should have 6-8), so I'm satisfied. My husband the scientist, on the other hand, says, "I need empirical research" and he's searching all kinds of journals. He won't be satisfied until he finds it there.

Overall we are just loving this baby! She is so, so cute and so sweet! She loves to be rocked or held close. She's only really gotten upset and cried once (besides the brief crying all babies do when you change their diaper or their clothes) and I would say she's a pretty happy baby. We go home from the hospital tomorrow, so that's when the big adventure begins!

Beth,
I'm so happy for you and Hunter. Sounds like a nice dinner...my hospital didn't have anything like that. How nice! Glad things are going well. I remember now tough the nursing can be. I hope it works out for you. I only held out for about a month before I gave up.
I can't wait to meet Eleanor one day. She looks absolutely beautiful in the pictures. Congratulations again!

Oh Beth that sounds wonderful! I hope the nursing gets better. Hunter is so sweet by supporting you 200%! Have a good night before you go home. Take it easy, relax and be spoiled as well.

I'm so glad that things are going well. You sound really happy!

Nursing is a wonderful way to bond with your new baby.

Do not pay much heed to what the nurse has told you re. wet diapers. Two to three on day two is perfect. Day three she should have three; day four there should be four, and so on until she's about a week old. Then you will be swimming in diapers! ;)

Taking your new baby home is a wonderful experience as well, but with my first I found it a little daunting. I remember thinking, "Okay...I need a *mother* to come and take care of both of us!" The hormonal changes made for a few gray days ("baby blues"). (I actually cried when her umbilical stump fell off--"We're not connected anymore!!" I sobbed.)

If you find this happening to you, just remember that you are her mother, you know implicitly what is best for her, and there is no one else on earth she wants or needs more than you!

You are such a lovely family; you are going to have SO MUCH FUN!

Hey,
I had pain at first when I was nursing Sam and he had latch problems because he was "tongue tied." It isn't anything major but his frenulum was too long and after the doc cut it Sam could nurse and latch and I didn't hurt any more. You might want to ask the lactation consultant if that is the case. Sam's was obvious because when he tried to stick his tongue out it was heart shaped and wouldn't go out of his mouth. Just a thought, take it for what it's worth because I am SURE you are getting advice overload right now. HA!

Eleanor is beautiful though and you look great, too!

Glad things are going well. Your hospital does sound very nice. Ours was a great, but we didn't get any kind of celebration meal.

It is early...take your time with nursing. It was a struggle the first few weeks for us, but both Christopher and I got the hang of it. Then my body got used to how much milk to supply (too much is better than too little). Before you know it, it will be easy for you and baby!
Enjoy every minute!

I had to laugh that she wanted to be fed when you ate - SO NORMAL --- this will continue every meal - no avoiding it!

Love you, Buela
